Hello DeWitt Public School families. Please let me introduce myself. My name is Leigh Volkers. I have twenty four years of teaching experience. I spent the first ten years of my teaching career as a Kindergarten teacher in the Lansing School District. I have been with DeWitt Public Schools since the 2012-2013 school year. My years of teaching in Lansing provided me with a deep appreciation for student diversity. In addition, my work with at-risk students has infused my teaching with a sense of intensity. I believe that a strong start in early elementary grades can set a child up for lifelong academic and personal success. I strive to turn all experiences during our school days into learning opportunities.
I received my B.A. in Elementary Education with a minor in Mathematics and Earth Science from Michigan State University. In addition, I have a Masters degree in Elementary Reading and Literacy from Walden University. I am very passionate about teaching young children. I believe that my passion for learning is on display on a daily basis in the classroom. My goal is to instill a deep love of learning and exploration into each child who passes through my classroom.
I know that as an elementary teacher I will play an important role in your child's social, emotional and academic development. I believe that each child can reach his/her learning potential when guided with high expectations and the opportunity to explore and develop in a safe learning environment. Our days and weeks will be filled with wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow. The children in my classroom quickly learn that being part of a class is like being part of a family; we respect, love and support each other. The children learn to feel invested in their classmates' success as well as their own success.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to work with your child this year! I look forward to being your partner in the growth and development of your child. We will celebrate together as your child becomes an independent reader, writer and problem solver. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time with any questions.
On a personal note, I live here in DeWitt with my husband, Rick. Rick and I enjoy outdoor activities and traveling. One of the joys of living in the same community that I teach in is that I often run into students while out and about town. What a joy it is to see my students outside of the classroom!
I have created many different pages within this website so that you can easily find needed information at any given time throughout the year. Please note that page tabs are displayed at the top of each page so that you can navigate between different pages on the website simply by clicking on the appropriate page tab. Please know that many of the tabs have drop down menus to help you find just what you are looking for.
